One common question that we hear – “Do braces hurt?” The fear of pain and discomfort is enough to discourage people from getting braces. However, the good news is, it’s not as bad as you are thinking. Initially, you may feel some discomfort right after the orthodontist first puts in the braces and when the metal wires get tightened; however, there are ways to get around the pain.
Here are some braces pain relief tips to help put you at ease:
Oral Anesthetics
Rubbing oral anesthetic directly on the sensitive teeth and gums is one simple way to get some relief from braces pain. Oral anesthetic desensitizes your teeth and gum so you don’t feel the discomfort as your teeth slowly shift. You can use a cotton swab or your fingers to gently rub and apply the oral anesthetic. Speak with your orthodontics about oral anesthetic recommendations.
Over-the-counter Pain Medication
Be proactive and take over-the-counter medicine, like Advil or Tylenol, an hour before your appointment. This will help you feel less pain and discomfort during and after your appointment.
Use an Ice Pack
Using an ice pack can help reduce inflammation and numb the mouth, which can help you not feel the pain or reduce it. Gently apply the ice pack to the outside of your mouth.
Sip on Ice Water
A simple glass of cold ice water, ice cream or cold foods can also help numb your mouth and relieve some pain and discomfort from braces.
Eat Soft Foods
Right after getting your braces, stick with soft foods such as mashed potatoes or soups and avoid the harder, harsher snacks. Your orthodontists will also tell you about food restrictions for those getting braces, such as avoiding gum and hard to chew foods.
A Gum Massage
Just like rubbing out sore muscles, you may want to gently rub your gums in a circular motion with one of your fingers just long enough to relax your swollen gums. Make sure that you are gentle and don’t overdo it.
Orthodontic Wax
Most orthodontists send you home with some orthodontic wax, which helps protect the inside of your lips, cheeks, and gums from the brackets of the braces. This barrier can help reduce the sharp ends from irritating your mouth.
Be Patient
The most important tip is to have some patience as you go through the adjustment period from your braces. It’s important to contact your orthodontist if you have any concerns and persisting pain that is outside the scope of the norm. Bear in mind the endgame and the investment on your oral health, smile and overall health.
